BOLD Intentions: We Made Some.

January 2017 – We joined together as participants in a quiet space to engage in intimate dialogue, and nervously or confidently approached the podium to state aloud one bold intention we were trusting God for in 2017. One by one, we stood behind the podium to state our areas of personal struggle where we have experienced a measure of defeat – and our intention to do something ridiculously bold to confront our fear, insecurity or barrier to winning. In a safe space, we highlighted our strengths, our hopes and visions of the future. And, we stated with absolute clarity our awareness of the barriers that hindered our pursuit of that which we believe God has for us. We connected one another with other women who are operating in similar spaces to build our network. We lifted one another up with words and embrace. We edified, empowered and equipped one another on our respective journeys to WIN in life. Sharing our favorite motivational messages, reminding ourselves who we are in Christ with life affirming “I AM” statements, and taking a photo shoot to commemorate our decision to choose to win, this was a blessed day and a tremendously positive way to start the new year.

Celebrate 2-years with us! It’s a Rooftop Soiree

Cheers to two Years of service! We are excited to see year two and thrilled for everything this year has in store. We’ve coined this year: 2017 The Year of BOLD Intentions. This FREE* even will be held at Stratus Rooftop Lounge, 433 Chestnut Street Phila PA (atop the Hotel Monaco), where we will take in the gorgeous views of the city warmed by outdoor fire pits and raise our glasses in the air to celebrate the many women who have made decisions to honor God with their lives and live victoriously! Whether they launched a nonprofit, started their own family and youth agency, obtained their GED, embarked upon motherhood with hope, transitioned from employment to entrepreneurship, began ministry in new areas, made a pivot in their careers, embarked upon unique journeys that allowed them to unleash their God-given gifts aligned with their purpose, in pursuit of their passions, bringing glory to God. We are excited about the work we do, the lives we’ve awakened, the visions we’ve seen realized – and we are going to celebrate. (Shhh . . . it’s also our founders birthday, so come celebrate Melonie Butler, as she launched this vision on her birthday month as she believed it aligned with her God-given purpose.) Please join us! We hope to have 3-5 women attend who will make a BOLD intention to trust God with renewed vigor and align their actions with His will. This will be a high energy, fun and good time. *We are taking up a donation at the door.

Meet Us at Chipotle: Fundraising Event Dec. 11th

We would like to thank the Chipotle Fundraising Team for selecting I Choose To Win for its in-store fundraiser. On December 11, 2016, we will host a burrito-a-thon from 12 pm – 4 pm. Every burrito/entree sold that day during those hours that mention I Choose To Win at the Fort Washington, PA location, will contribute toward a generous financial gift (50% of sales) Chipotle will donate to our nonprofit so we can continue to edify, empower and equip women to WIN in life. So, it’s in our best interest to pack the house that Sunday. We are treating this like an Open House, so arrive anytime between 12 pm to 4 pm (no commitment to stay the entire time), there will be raffle items, trivia questions and give-a-ways. Fun photo-booth style photos will be taken with inspirational and motivational messages.  Here’s the deal, we thought about football and church conflicts and have come up with the following ideas to get you in the door: Get Your Grub Before The Game: Make it Mexican at Your Eagles Watch Party! If you and your friends or family plan to 1:00 pm Philadelphia Eagles game against the Washington Redskins, grab your burritos ahead of time! In fact, get a bunch, cut them in half and serve them for lunch to all your guests. Skip Post-Church Sunday Brunch. Make it Mexican for Lunch: Those of you who typically do brunch after church on Sundays, change it up and grab a burrito, salad bowl or tacos instead. Just this once . . . (pretty please). If you do, I will take a few nice pics as you grub on Chipotle in your Sunday best. Fuel Up Before You Shop: You’re gonna be hungry if holiday shopping is on the calendar. If you’re going to spend money somewhere, spend it here, where 50% of proceeds support 2017 programming. Thank you in advance. Just Meet Me at Chipotle. Period. If you haven’t seen us in a while, come out on this day anytime between 12 pm – 4 pm. We are making an event out of it, so it’s still an impactful time while fundraising. Hope to see you there. To Sign Up in advance, CLICK HERE TO LET US KNOW YOU’LL BE THERE. If you sign up, I will send reminders. Add December 11th to your schedule before you forget. This is a save the date announcement. More details will be provided as the event nears. To RSVP: CLICK HERE

Dear Black Girl . . . Can We Talk? Event Reflections

November 15, 2016 – Reflections of the Get Cha Mind Right and I Choose To Win November 12th Event written by Melonie Butler of I Choose To Win. Dear Black Girl . . . It’s nice to meet you. Positive music and encouraging lyrics invited folks in. Our photographer on duty, Jen Strickland, captured images of women as they set their intentions to WIN. An engaging icebreaker followed a brief welcome. Playing the “guessing game,” women had to guess what another woman expected to experience or feel upon leaving. Wearing the words “Focus,” “Love,” “Light,” “Motivation,” and “Forgiveness,” we set our expectations and were prepared to enjoy the workshop. What one woman wrote, another had to guess. Women who didn’t know one another began talking, laughing and hugging. Upon setting their intentions on the “I Choose to OVERCOME” board, the “I Choose to TAKE ACTION” board and the I Choose to WIN” board, Stephanie led us in prayer to ask for God’s covering before the day began. What started as self-introductions became so much more. It became an opportunity to share our hearts, hopes and struggles. It also served as a platform to provide others listening in the motivation and courage to struggle well or endure. Dear Black Girl . . . It’s okay to talk. At each woman’s “Dear Black Girl” moment to own the floor, honesty and the truth of their story poured forth, tears fell, hugs were is issued and lives were unfolding. See, what was supposed to be self-introductions turned into a “Can we talk honestly for a minute” heart surgery mini-session, a process within the I Choose To Win program where one digs deep to reveal the internal struggles that keeps them from giving God ones best. Dear Black Girl . . . You are not alone. As both a facilitator of the session and a participant, I heard my life story in all of the women. I empathized. I cried. I hugged. I remembered feeling or dealing with some of the struggles expressed. Being single has its challenges. Marriage has its challenges. Motherhood has its challenges. Careers have their challenges. Ministry has its challenges. Balancing many roles has its challenges. Many of our challenges are not unique or new, but when they are not openly discussed in a safe place without judgment, they become private internal struggles accompanied by mask wearing and silently pretending to be okay. Struggling with forgiveness, past hurt, disappointment, guilt, shame, feeling unappreciated, undervalued, insignificant are too great of burdens to bear – ALONE. So, on this day, we released and removed a layer of those things, which unburdened our hearts so we could feel lighter – and open our hearts to new intentions. Guess it’s true what they say: “A burden shared is halved. Joy shared is doubled.” Dear Black Girl . . . You Are Powerful – Remember That. The 4-question flow of the guided self-introductions was carefully crafted to not end with the struggle. The last question challenged women to inspect their lives to recall a time where they made up their mind to do something – and did it. Then, they had to share how that felt – and what it taught them. This reminded the women that the power to make a change for the better resides within them. Just as we could recall a time of empowerment or “I’m Done” moments, a pivotal decision was made that prompted an attitude shift and counter action in favor of “WINNING.” We needed them to recall this so they realize they still possess that same transformative power today. They only need to activate it. Dear Black Girl . . . Carve Time to Just Relax. Once everyone had a chance to share, we transitioned the energy in the room inward, so each woman could seek God, pray and/or process her thoughts. To accomplish this, we dimmed the lights, laid out our mats and prepared for a Vinyasa yoga session by FlexxYoga’s own, Cara Anderson. Intentionally focused on helping the women stay present, Cara incorporated breathing exercises for us to center and meditate on our specific intentions we set at the start of the day. Whatever we were seeking God’s restoring and overcoming power over, we were to focus on that as we inhaled and exhaled while moving our bodies. Her calming voice ushered us into an atmosphere of peace, stillness and absolute presence. In our silence, we could pray, deeply breathe, relax and just “be.” Dear Black Girl . . . Carve time to plan and get cha mind right. Over lunch, each woman had an opportunity to chat with one another and work on developing an action plan to begin focusing more intently on the area of her defined “WIN!” She defined her WIN, wrote her reason why this would be a WIN for her, she outlined her strategy to WIN and listed the resources and actions necessary to ensure it happens. At I Choose To Win and Get Cha Mind Right, we recognize the value of setting intentions, writing our dreams and creating goals aligned with a greater plan. It’s essential behaviors and practices each woman can take away from the session that will continue to allow her to see how powerful she is when she sets her mind on her goal – and take actions in short window of time to get small WINS accomplished. Dear Black Girl . . . Pay it forward. Lift another as you rise. Once the tables were cleared, we took to writing in journals – not for ourselves, but as gifts to give away. The theme, “Dear Black Girl!” We were filled with renewal, rejuvenation and reinvigoration of spirit, so we channeled that energy to write letters of challenge, motivation, encouragement and love to a younger black girl with the purpose of edifying, empowering and equipping them with words that will cause them to know they matter – and they are supported by another black girl. 10-Day
